I didn't have a bad day today but nothing went to plan. I think you can hear the instant good mood as I got home and checked on this.

The final exam for the year is this morning. I'm in the process of pre-loading with caffeine! It's a pretty cool system, maintaining exam conditions while doing distance study. Microphone and we**ams have to be on while you're in a zoom room with an assessor (alongside 20 other people). They have to be shown around the room with the we**am and see your ID 30 mins before the exam. They stay live (microphone and camera) for the entire time and enforce exam conditions. Functions like copy and paste are disabled on your computer. It's a weird system but I am impressed at how accessible it makes the studies!

Update on the Mossiface site

Mumma had all 6 chicks out this morning! It's the first time she's been out since day 18 of sitting, at about day 18 they go into "lockdown" and await the eggs to hatch at day 21! Mumma was very happy to be out in the sun. And the brave little chicks were happy to let her have some "me" time letting her groom herself a little.
*Don't worry the bucket you see is not water that's mums pallets the chicks have crumble in a shallow feeder and they share water in a shallow feeder with mum, they are able to stand well above the water if they choose to walk into it.

Welcome little chick! 😊 Spring has certainly sprung on the farm, we have our two seasoned mother hens, Australorp mumma and Barbara went broody very quickly out of winter. And we were prepared, mumma here has some buff Orpingtons and olive eggers! So stay tuned for next year the eggs are gaining another colour!
Barbara due next week has some more Aracanas, to boost the population. Our little barb is such a good mum, the only down side is she's a small little perkin girl, so she's a small but might mum though she can't sit on as many eggs as the other girls but last year she sat and raised two batches in one season and with such an early start this year who knows what the little pocket rocket will do 💕🥰

Tonight's learning:
*Positives*
I have become better at setting the hives up ready for transport in the preceeding inspections. Building entrance reducers/closers into the new hives was a brilliant idea. Moving them as single-deep hives also makes it easier when moving hives by hand. Finally, tight ratchet straps on wooden hives is 100% the way to hold them together.

*negatives*
We need to come up with a bee-friendly lighting system when moving the hives. I tripped over the ramp and fell to the ground with the first hive... but somehow managed to hit the deck still holding it together and upright.
Also, carrying them by hand is not an option. I need to come up with a good trolley system. Shoulders, back and ankle (from tripping) are not happy with me.

Tomorrow morning's daylight and the number of flying bees will tell me how well... or poorly... I've done!

This weekend will be an exciting time for us. Eight of the early hive splits from this season are strong enough to move up to the second site. After dark I'll close up the entrances and load the hives onto the trailer. On Sunday morning, we'll take them up!

After a great start to spring we've modified our goals to grow from 13 to 30, instead of 25. With luck, by the time autumn hits we'll have 15 hives at the home site and 15 hives at the second site.

I don't have any idea what our honey output will be in the Dec/Jan extraction as we've pushed the bees for growth again, instead of honey. However, I'm always impressed by the ability of the bees to expand to points where you can split off and make additional hives from the original. The more I work with them, the more they impress me!
